There are over 11 million people in the United States who consider themselves deaf or have significant hearing loss. Being culturally Deaf is often called the “hidden disability” as there is nothing that would outwardly indicate these people are any different than anyone else until they raise their hands to communicate. The differences do not stop there though. For deaf people, experiencing life in a way that focuses on what is accessible to you and primarily through visual means, results in differences that exceed communication alternatives.
