Learn some local history while celebrating Black History Month with this online program about one of the most famous horse trainers of his day. Tom Bass was born into slavery on the Bass Plantation south of Columbia, where he learned the horse trade from his grandfather. After moving to Mexico, Missouri, Tom gained a reputation as a gentle but effective trainer of even the most difficult horses. By the 1890s, he had achieved worldwide recognition as one of the best in his field.
Presenter Christal Bruner is the executive director of the Mexico-Audrain County Library District. A longtime resident of Mexico, her interest in Tom Bass was sparked by her first grade teacher Miss Rebecca K. Gibbs and meeting Bill Downey, the author of "Tom Bass: Black Horseman."
