From distinguished Abenaki filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin, "Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance" captures the story of Kanien’kéhaka (Mohawk) activists fighting against the local government’s proposed development of a private golf course on sacred burial grounds. Their struggle to protect their land became a historic confrontation — and one of the most widely publicized instances of government-sanctioned violence against First Nations peoples in the 20th century. This screening is in conjunction with the 2023 One Read program featuring the book "When Two Feathers Fell From they Sky," a novel with Indigenous characters and themes. (Dir. Alanis Obomsawin, 1993. 119 min. In English and French with English subtitles. Not Rated).

There will be a brief pre-film presentation about how indigeneity is expressed through, film, literature and land.

Adults. You can pick up free tickets to this documentary film at Ragtag starting at 10 a.m. the day of the show. See full policy below.

Tickets to free events are available at our box office starting at 10am the day of the show. No more than four free tickets will be given to one person. A free ticket guarantees you a seat until 10 minutes before showtime, but not after. If all tickets have been distributed and there are open seats at 10 till, we will start seating the theater from the waiting list (queue). Ticket holders will continue to be admitted at this time if seats are available. No latecomers will be admitted after the feature has started (often there are no trailers before free or community films). This policy allows us to start on time and give the audience a distraction-free experience.
