Join historian Greg Olson for a discussion of this year's One Read book, "North Woods" by Daniel Mason. Beginning with a young couple fleeing their Puritan colony, this work of historical fiction follows a series of inhabitants of a single house in New England. Mason links the stories of an eccentric apple grower and his daughters, an escaped enslaved woman and a man who is hunting her, a landscape painter, a spiritualist/clairvoyant, a man with schizophrenia and others. He expertly employs a range of literary styles, including letters, pulp journalism and speculative fiction, to tell the story of the United States through the lens of a single location.
Discussion leader Greg Olson is a historian and graphic artist who lives in Columbia, Missouri. Olson is the author of six books including "Indigenous Missourians: Ancient Societies to the Present." For 35 years, he has worked with members of various Indigenous tribes to tell stories of Native presence in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. He is also the chair of the For the People Powwow Committee, which hosts an intertribal powwow in Jefferson City, Missouri, each Memorial Day weekend.
