In her debut novel, "Maud's Line," Margaret Verble, herself an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation, does a beautiful job of vividly describing a sometimes hardscrabble Indigenous life that nevertheless has the comfort that familiarity and extended family bring. Place is especially important to the story, and the setting is beautifully realized, as are the characters who populate this gentle novel with its sometimes slow but deliberate pace.
