Roots musician Chris Vallillo will present an introduction to bottleneck slide guitar at this hands-on workshop designed for beginner to intermediate level guitar players. Chris will introduce the style, and then demonstrate open tuning, slide guitar setup, basic techniques, phrasing, muting, making minor chords in an open tuning and melody fingering behind the slide. Students will also learn a slide version of "Amazing Grace." Those attending will receive a hand-cut bottleneck slide. Having a basic understanding of fingerpicking is helpful, but not required.
A singer-songwriter and instrumentalist with an affinity for American roots music, Vallillo is a skilled six-string and bottleneck slide guitarist who incorporates original and traditional material into his music. Perhaps the archaeology degree Vallillo earned at Beloit College helped him see the important little details of life which imbue his songs with a sense of history. His music echoes the influences of Mississippi John Hurt, Norman Blake, Doc Watson and John Fahey.
Adults, beginner to intermediate players. Bring your guitar. Please register. (See Chris perform on March 31.)
