Learn how to incorporate place into your writing — weaving details of setting into theme, character and voice. This creative writing workshop will include a brief presentation on craft, looking at examples of writing together and discussing them as a group. Then, use prompts and free writing time to create your own original writing, share your writing out loud and provide feedback to one another.

About the presenters:
Emily Clemente holds an MFA in fiction from Florida State University and is currently a Ph.D. student in creative writing at the University of Missouri, where she has taught mixed-genre creative writing, intermediate fiction and life writing to undergraduate students. Emily has also taught creative writing to middle and high school students as an instructor at summer intensive writing camps and to incarcerated women through the Southeast Review's Incarcerated Writers Program.
Clemente is a published writer of both fiction and nonfiction essays, with work appearing in December, Jellyfish Review and Deep South Magazine, among others. Her writing has earned her a Pushcart Prize nomination, a semifinalist place for American Short Fiction's Halifax Ranch Prize, the Max Steele Award in Fiction and support from the Southampton Writer's Conference at Stony Brook University. William Lanstone is an English Ph.D. student at the University of Missouri. He holds an M.S. in narrative medicine from the University of Southern California, during which he facilitated community creative writing based workshops for individuals transitioning from locked mental health situations. He has workshopped works of fiction, nonfiction and poetry at the graduate level, and has taught creative writing to undergraduates as a guest lecturer. He is currently drafting a novel styled after notable modernist writers, and his current research interests include modernism, health humanities and narratives of aging, disability and death.
