The novel’s narrator, Nathaniel Williams, reflects on the events of 1945, when he and his sister were temporarily left in the care of a London neighbor while their parents moved to Singapore. Known as The Moth, the neighbor and his eccentric friends share a history of secretive activities during World War II, and seem committed to protecting and educating the children for mysterious reasons that Nathaniel will only discover years later.
